Rules for the 2021 Photo Contest Curiosities of research

Université Côte d’Azur, a world-class research-intensive multidisciplinary university, is organizing a competition for the best research photo in conjunction with the "Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique" and in partnership with the "Centre National de Ressources Biologiques Marines", EMBRC-FRANCE (3 marine stations: Banyuls, Roscoff and Villefranche-sur-mer).

Presentation of the contest

The competition offers two categories in the annual theme « Curiosities of research » :

  • Research category for photos that present a particular scientific interest

  • Artistic category for photos presenting an artistic point of you of research

All "Université Côte d'Azur" staff member and partner research institutions on the french riviera are invited to participate.
The winning photos will be exhibited and presented at events for the general public, such as "la fête de la science" and "la nuit européenne des chercheurs", as well as at internal events at the university. Prizes will also be awarded to the 2021 winning images.

Contest theme

The theme of the competition selected for the year 2021 is « Curiosities of research ».

Terms of participation

The competition is free and open to all categories of personnel attached to the Université Côte d'Azur and its research partners, without any particular theme, with the exception of members of the jury and their families.
The contest organizing team reserves the right not to select photos that it deems not to be in keeping with the annual theme of the contest or to be pornographic, pedophilic, racist, discriminatory or of any other malicious nature.

Modality of participation

Each image must be submitted, and the online form completed.
Only the images accompanied with a fully completed form will be taken into account. The participant must be the author of the pictures he/she submits.
Participants may submit a maximum of 3 images per category, i.e. a maximum of 6 images per participant.
The participant will not be able to contest the decisions of the jury.

Technical characteristics of the photos
  • Only ".JPG" and uncompressed formats such as ".TIF" are accepted.

  • The minimum resolution should be 300dpi.

  • The images submitted must not have been the subject of an exclusive transfer of rights to a publisher or any other third party.

Jury composition

The jury will be composed of members of the scientific community and the image world.

Selection criteria

After submissions close on September 12, 2021, images will be submitted to the jury for evaluation.
The criteria for selecting the winning images will be as set out below and the decisions of the jury are final.
Research category :

  • Scientific relevance of the image

  • Aesthetics

  • Title

  • Vulgarized caption

Artistic category :

  • Creativity

  • Staging

  • Original title

  • Vularized caption

Prizes

Participation in the contest, under the conditions of these rules, offers the possibility of winning prizes. The prizes will be mentioned later on the contest website and the rules will be updated.

Announcement of the results and prize-giving

Results will be published on the competition website in the fall of 2021. Only the winners of the competition will be notified individually of the results by email. The prizes will be awarded at an event organized by "Université Côte d'Azur" in December 2021.

Right of representation

All "Université Côte d'Azur" staff and its partners reserve the right to use the winning entries for non-commercial purposes (website, prints, etc.) without restriction or request for financial participation.
This authorization is granted for the duration of the participants' intellectual property rights for all uses related to the promotion and valorization of this competition.
Without receiving a notified refusal, the images submitted may be used in the media libraries of the organizing institutional bodies.

Responsibilities

The organizers cannot be held responsible for any problems related to the contest, whether it is a human error, computer problem, technological problem or any other nature.
The organizers reserve the right to modify the rules, to update them or to cancel the contest as well as the right not to publish the winning works if the participation or the quality of the images were insufficient.

Use of personal information

Each participant has a right of access, notification, rectification and deletion of information about him by creating a ticket via the GLPI form.

Responsibilities

Participation in the contest implies full acceptance of these rules and the decisions of the jury, which are final.
Any difficulty that may arise from the application and interpretation of these rules (or not forseen in the current rules)  will be settled by the organizers whose decisions are final.
